Naturopathic Doctor
Dr. Jean-Jacques Dugoua HBSc ND PhD, or Dr. JJ as he is affectionately known, is a Naturopathic Doctor (ND) with a Doctorate (PhD) in pharmaceutical sciences. He is a clinical pharmacologist, public speaker and researcher.
Dr. JJ is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor since 2003. He is the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of the Liberty Clinic in downtown Toronto and the first ND to practice at the Toronto Western Hospital in the Artist Health Center, one of the few NDs practicing in a hospital in Canada. He has done research with the Motherisk Program at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto and was an Assistant Professor (Status Only) with the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Toronto.
Dr. JJ completed his Doctorate (PhD) in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Toronto. As part of his PhD research, he investigated the safety of natural products during pregnancy and lactation at the Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto (Canada) and conducted a clinical trial on the effects of cinnamon on type 2 diabetes at the Toronto Western Hospital and at the Centre Hospitaler de Sherbrooke (CHUS).
Dr. JJ is a co-author of “Herbal Medicines in Pregnancy and Lactation – An Evidence-based Approach First Edition”). He has published many peer-reviewed scientific publications in the medical literature. He is a world expert on natural products pharmacology and pregnancy safety. Print and television media frequently consult him, including regular appearances on the Marilyn Denis Show.
Dr. JJ is an avid public speaker. He has given many presentations to pharmacists, medical professionals, government, academics, artists and musicians, students, teachers, cancer survivors and the general public. He has also given presentations internationally, including presentations at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Washington DC. Dr. JJ is also the co-host of the popular podcast Vitamin Junkeys, which receives >250,000 viewings.
“I practice science-based medicine, rely on holistic wisdom from the past and use natural treatments for disease”, say Dr. JJ. He combines naturopathic medicine, clinical nutrition, evidence-based medicine, acupuncture, detoxification, and intravenous (IV) therapies in his treatments. He has worked with patients suffering from chronic disease, including cancer, infertility, hypothyroid, diabetes, arthritis, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivities, chronic pain, gastrointestinal disease, hair loss, skin disease, stress, anxiety and heart disease. In addition to general practice, his clinical focus is on treating infections, digestion, stress/anxiety, thyroid, fertility, hair/skin conditions and adjunctive cancer support. He practices preventative medicine where patients are given treatment plans and health strategies to optimize their health.
As the CMO of the Liberty Clinic, Dr. JJ believes that working with a team of multi-disciplinary health professionals is the most successful route to help patients reach their health goals. “Four heads are better than one,” says Dr. JJ. “My patients see results and they know that the whole team is looking out for their health from head to toe”.
